Frequently Asked Questions about Conversion of Faculty Appointment Terms - University of Maryland
Frequently Asked Questions about Conversion of Faculty Appointment Terms
- What are the starting and ending dates for Academic Year
(9-Month), 9.5 Month, and 10 Month Appointments?
The Academic Year Appointment runs from Aug 23 - May 22.
The 9.5-Month Appointment runs from Aug 17 - May 31, while
the contract year for faculty with 10-Month Appointments runs from Aug 17-June
15, with the last 15 of those days to be used for annual leave.
- What are the differences in rules on summer research compensation for
faculty who are appointed to these different terms?
Academic Year faculty have the opportunity to earn up to 3.0 months of additional
compensation (33.3% of their academic year appointment salary) from grants
and contracts that flow through the University, subject to the limitations
of the sponsoring agencies.
Those on 9.5 Month Appointments man only ear 2.5 months of additional
compensation (up to 26.3% of their 9.5-month salary)
- If a faculty member changes from a 9.5-Month or a 10 Month Appointment
to an Academic Year Appointment, what changes besides summer compensation
restrictions?
A year's sabbatical leave for a 9.5 and 10 Month Appointment faculty is formally
granted for the period of Aug 17-May 31, and this would decrease to the period
of Aug 23-May 22 for a faculty member with an Academic Year Appointment. Similar
adjustments would be made for faculty on a semester's sabbatical leave. In
addition, 10 Month Appointment faculty would no longer be granted annual
leave.
- If a faculty member changes from a 9.5-Month or a 10 Month Appointment
to an Academic Year Appointment, may the faculty member at some future point
in time change back to a 9.5-Month Appointment?
No. The 9.5-Month Appointment option was discontinued as an option for all future faculty appointments, effective July 1, 2001.
- If a faculty member on a 12-Month Appointment converts to an Academic Year Appointment, what is the impact of such conversion?
Faculty changing to an Academic Year Appointment would cease accumulation
of annual leave and personal leave. The faculty member would receive compensation
for all unused annual leave at the time of the conversion. The number of sick
days accrued per year would decrease to 12.5 and future retirement contributions
would be based on the Academic Year salary rather than the full 12-month salary.
- Conversely, if a faculty member converts to
a 12-Month Appointment, what is the impact of such conversion?
Faculty would begin receiving annual leave and personal leave.
The number of sick days accrued per year would
increase to 15 and retirement contributions would be based on the
the full 12-month salary.
