Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The Office of Faculty Affairs is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We support all faculty members in their efforts to thrive and excel. Through research, University of Maryland faculty members contribute to our understanding of the past, the present, and the future. Only through a depth of understanding, vital expertise, and the relentless pursuit of knowledge can we build a better and more humane world.
Through teaching, faculty members equip future generations with the capacity to solve emerging challenges and embrace difference in an ever-changing world. Through their leadership and administration, faculty members create a welcoming environment that supports a wide variety of perspectives.
Diversity refers to the differences among scholars, educators, and leaders; including, but not limited to, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, family status, language, age, gender, and sexual orientation. A diverse faculty is a (Terrapin)STRONG faculty.
An equitable environment is one of fair treatment and equivalent access to opportunities and advancement.
Inclusion refers to the efforts that we support to build productive communities of faculty members in departments, colleges, and across the campus. An inclusive and welcoming climate embraces and leverages differences for the good of the university and extends respect to all of its members.
Land Grant Institution
The University of Maryland is a land grant institution. We have a commitment to serving our community, broadly defined, through education and innovation.
We also recognize, however, that land-grant institutions were created through the dispossession of Indigenous Peoples. The University of Maryland is built on plantation land acquired from slaveholders that once belonged to the Piscataway Conoy people. We work and live every day amid contradictions between our fraught history, the ongoing legacies of violence, and our TerrapinSTRONG ideals for the future.
