Export Controls and Research Security Regulation
The UMD Research Security Office will provide an overview on topics related to US export control laws, sensitive research, and other US research security laws and agency policies. This session will be primarily applicable to faculty involved in applied or developmental research in technical disciplines.
Presenters

Adam Grant is the Director of the Research Security Office at the University of Maryland (UMD). Adam joined UMD in 2012. Prior to UMD, Adam worked in the aviation industry at L-3 Unmanned Systems and as a Civil Servant for the US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR). Adam’s specialties include contracts and grant administration, export control, regulatory compliance, procurement, and program management. Adam is closely involved in the research security implementations (NSPM-33) at the University of Maryland. Adam is a member of the Academic Advisory Council of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Accreditation Body and is on the Executive Committee of the Academic Security and Counter Exploitation group.
April Kankonde is a Research Security Manager within the Research Security Office at the University of Maryland. April joined UMD in 2020, working on the Research Computing team within the Division of IT. Her primary focus at the university has been on securing the university's CUI Environment and managing NIST 800-171 compliance activities; along with CMMC preparation. Transitioning over to the Division of Research in 2024, April's focus is on bridging the gap between cybersecurity and research; understanding federal regulations as it relates to research, and identifying campus IT resources that meet the level of security required based on data classification. Prior to UMD, April worked as a government contractor at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and TSA HQ. April holds a Master's degree in Cybersecurity Management & Policy, and recently joined the planning committee for the Regulated Research Community of Practice (RRCoP).
Jennifer Boone is the Program Manager within the Research Security Office at the University of Maryland.
