I completed my undergraduate degree at Smith College and my masters and doctorate at University of Maryland, all in economics. While a graduate student I worked part time as a Faculty Research Assistant for an externally-funded research center based at the UMD. For four years I participated in research and educational activities to assist Mongolia in its transition from communism to a market-based democracy. After finishing my dissertation in 1997 I returned to the same research center as a Faculty Research Associate where I continued research and educational activities supporting legal and economic reforms in a wide variety of countries, including Romania, Egypt, Indonesia, various Caribbean countries, and Madagascar, to name a few. Clients included USAID, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. I switched focus to undergraduate education in 2006 and took on the role of Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Economics Department, a position I held until I retired in 2020.
