This will be a panel discussion/Q&A with PTK faculty in various roles and will cover advice on how to become an administrator, pros and cons, job duties and skills that are required/beneficial for these positions. We'll also field questions from the audience.

Lee Friedman

Moderator Lee Friedman is a Principal Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.  In his role, he teaches approximately 200 students per semester in either general or organic chemistry.  He also is an administrator who does teaching and TA assignments, advising, graduation clearances, scheduling and other duties.

Sylvette La Touche-Howard, Assistant Dean, Office of Public Health Practice & Community Engagement; Associate Clinical Professor; ADVANCE PTK Facilitator, GEMSTONE Mentor.

Sylvette La Touche-Howard has been at the University of Maryland, College Park since 2013.  Initially an instructor, she became Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Public Health and was promoted to Associate Clinical Professor in 2020.  Since 2022, she has been Assistant Dean of Public Health Practice and Community Engagement.  Her interests lie in working with individuals and communities to bridge behavioral health, research, and social impact to create a sustainable and equitable future.

Nicole Coomber, Assistant Dean of Experiential Learning and Clinical Professor of Management & Organization, Robert H. Smith School of Business

Nicole Coomber is a clinical professor of Management and Organization at the Robert H. Smith School of business.  She is also Assistant Dean for Experiential Learning, where she helps build connections with external partners, including corporations and alumni.  Her affiliation with U.Md. started in 2006 and she has been in multiple roles, including program manager, director, and lecturer.

Hilary Bierman

Hilary Bierman, Principal Lecturer and Director, Neuroscience major

Hilary Bierman earned her undergraduate degree at U.Md. and returned to the University in 2009 as a postdoctoral researcher.  She rose through the PTK teaching ranks to Principal Lecturer in 2024.  She is the founding director of the neuroscience minor, established in 2019.  In her role as director, she advises and participates in course and curriculum development.  She also hires and supervises the staff in the undergraduate office.
