Honoring the life of Reinhard Radermacher

The Clark School of Engineering announced with great sadness, to share the news of the sudden passing of Reinhard Radermacher, Minta Martin Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE). Reinhard’s unexpected loss is a shock to us all.

Reinhard was an internationally recognized expert in energy conversion systems, specializing in heat pumps, air conditioners, and refrigeration systems, and integrated cooling, heating, and power systems. His work generated over 600 publications, including four books, more than 200 invention records, and 17 patents. Academics, researchers, and other inventors alike sought him out for inspiration and insight.

In 1991, he co-founded the University of Maryland’s Center for Environmental Energy Engineering to conduct pre-competitive research in support of industry needs and empower students with the tools to succeed in the workforce. CEEE continues to lead in both ways.

Reinhard was also a revered member of the Clark School community: he genuinely cared about our school and university, and improving the quality of life for those we serve.

He was invigorated by his collaborations with colleagues and brought energy and clear-eyed determination to them. He also relished mentoring his students, taking time to eat lunch with them each week in the dining hall. Students, faculty, staff, alums, and supporters benefited from the sense of camaraderie he helped create.

We realize that our community may experience a range of emotions upon hearing this news. We encourage you to seek the support of friends, family, and university staff. The Clark School is also here to help.

Many of you will recall how the Clark School was recently awarded funding from the National Science Foundation to establish an Engineering Research Center (ERC) focused on the future of refrigeration technologies. Reinhard was instrumental in our school winning this significant award. His vision, energy, and drive helped to paint a picture of the future of the field of refrigeration. Through CEEE and this ERC, we will continue to honor the legacy of Reinhard every day, address the challenges he spoke of, and impact the world in a positive way.

As we reflect on Reinhard’s life and the impact he made on us all, let us carry those lessons forward and be a force for good to the world around us.

We ask our entire community to keep Reinhard and his family in our thoughts at this time.
