Dear UMD Communities:
We are now the "LGBTQ+ Equity Center" instead of the "LGBT Equity Center."
Nothing is perfect or lasts forever. Our office has been describing our communities and work as "LGBTQ+" for many years now, and we're updating our Center's name to match the description we've been using colloquially.
It will take some time to fully roll out this name change in all materials and resources, but the change is approved and completed officially, so we ask that others please begin to update their references to our Center accordingly.
Due to technology limitations the "+" will not appear in every instance of our name. We have updated our social media handles to be @LGBTQequity. Our email address is now email@example.com, and emails to the old address will forward. Updates to the website address are intended/forthcoming (though we also intend for the old/current links to continue to function).
This change is personally important to me as someone who identifies with the term "queer," and the "+" is a reminder to us that there are many identities that are important that are not in a brief acronym-- for me, personally, that includes "agender" and "nonbinary" and the Japanese term "x-jendā." For some folks, the "+" might lift up terms such as "same-gender loving," "cuir," "intersex," or "asexual."
Let our ever-growing brilliance, excellence, and care for one another be even more joyful, as we expand the language we use to describe our communities.
In community and gratitude,
Shige Sakurai (they/them)
Acting Director, LGBTQ+ Equity Center
