Changes to Adding Content

Our new site has some changes to the way you enter content. It may take you a little time to grow accustomed to the changes. As always, if something is intolerable, tell me and I'll work on a solution.

One example of the change is adding a person to the site. Instead of adding "Award Recipient" or "Committee Member", you would simple choose "Person" from the Add Content menu. After entering the person's last name and first name, college (by acronym), and department, you would scroll to the bottom and click the appropriate button to open the fields where you enter the rest of the information.

Taxonomy Lists

Another change is that the site uses taxonomies in many different ways. A taxonomy is just a list of categories or types, such as the categories we use to organize information on the Search by Topic page. The advantage for us is that taxonomy terms are stored by number. You can change the title assigned to that number easily. So if, for example, you wanted to change Academic Leadership Program Fellows to Academic Leadership Program Scholars, you have only to change the taxonomy term title.

The challenge is that you have to choose a taxonomy term from a list, and the list will not appear until you type something. So you must have some idea of the term you want. When I can't remember, I just type an a in the list box, and the tags that have a in them will appear.

Taxonomy terms are recognizable because they have a number next to the term. The number will not appear on the site, so you needn't worry about deleting it. In fact, you can't delete it.

Views

Many of our pages include views, which take a certain kind of information and display it in a certain way. An example of a view is the display of the front page cards, or the page that lists all the recipients of the DST award. On the old site, you could recognize a view because though the information was visible in the editing window, you couldn't make any edits to it. However, with the new version of Drupal, we have a new version of the editing window. You cannot see a view in this editing window (most unfortunately, though they are working to add that).

If you're working on a page that includes a view, just do your best to avoid typing where the view will appear. If this turns out to be problematic, I will figure out a way to mark the view in the editing window.
